"Ugh: the 'free' in freelance" - by Daniel Massey for Crain's New York Business.com

More than 40% of contract workers report trouble getting paid. Average owed: $12K

The Freelancer's Union, Wall Street Journal and even myself have written about freelancer's not getting paid for work they have performed. This is an atrocity for the business world and for freelancers. These same businesses would ruin our credit if we failed to pay them in a timely manner for goods or services received. Maybe there should be a credit system for these companies. Where if there are so many complaints about their payment practices then they are required to make a good faith deposit that is between 10 to 20 percent of the project budget. If such a fee were imposed then maybe some businesses would think twice before they stiffed us.

What do you guys think?
